Never before have students had such easy access to information via technology; yet equally, never before have they been at so much risk when accessing information online.
Viruses, phishing scams, cryptolockers, while still a serious threat, are nowhere near as frequent as the risk posed by students having uncontrolled access to inappropriate online content. This happens everyday in schools right under teachers’ noses, thanks to schools allowing unmanaged devices on their network. Students can and do use unmanaged, non-approved apps and extensions to bypass network security features and access normally restricted content. It’s easy to do – just look on YouTube!
Chromebooks avoid this problem through simple, cost-effective management via the Chrome Management console and the Chrome Management License. Chromebook device management allows Chrome devices to be locked down to managed school Google accounts, meaning students are only allowed to use apps and extensions approved by the school* while also ensuring other important safety features are enforced (Safe Search, YouTube restriction etc) and allowing other important features not available on unmanaged Chromebooks.
Recent events widely publicized illustrate the need for schools to ensure they are doing all they can to keep kids safe when using technology. Google Chrome Management makes this possible. If your school uses Chromebooks, either school-owned or BYOD, they should be managed.
