Microsoft retires Office 365 A1 Plus for education licenses on 1st August 2024
Microsoft are making some changes to the Office 365 A1 Plus licences which will take effect in your Office 365 admin portal on 1 August 2024. The Office 365 A1 Plus licences are a free Office subscription that include Office desktop apps and this product is being retired. If you are using these licences then you will be impacted.
What does this mean for your school?
On 1 August 2024, all Office 365 A1 Plus licenses that you have assigned to staff or students will be automatically migrated to the Office 365 A1 license. The Office 365 A1 free license will continue to give your users access to online Office 365 apps, collaboration, and classroom tools but they will no longer have access to the Office desktop apps.
In order to deliver the best value for money solution to the Education sector, it is recommended schools use the Office 365 A1 free (online) license where possible.
If you need your current users to have ongoing access to the Office desktop apps, you will need to take an action under the following related scenario:
-
- If a staff member requires access to the Office desktop apps and you have spare Microsoft 365 A3 or A5 licences, then you would assign these as required.
- If Office desktop apps are required by staff and you have no spare Microsoft 365 A3 or A5 licences for staff, then you will need to request these from nzschools@cyclone.co.nz
- If a student requires access to the Office desktop apps and you have spare student use benefit Microsoft 365 A3 or A5 licences, then you would assign these as required.
- If Office desktop apps are required by students and you have no spare student use benefit Microsoft 365 A3 or A5 licences, then you will need to request these from nzschools@cyclone.co.nz
- If you wish to retain mailboxes for ex-students, then please request the free Exchange Online for Alumni licences from nzschools@cyclone.co.nz
The information below will help you decide the correct licence for your staff members.
